My Skincare Routine

Words by Matt Huxley

Skincare routines are funny things. Just as we find something that works for us another new product grabs our attention and replaces an old staple. Being a blogger, I’m constantly trying new products. Some of them work, some don’t. But I’ve finally managed to narrow down the brands and products that actually work for me. Annnnnnnd I’ve got back ups in case one miraculously stops working.

My secret is to keep it simple, and change it up. Stick to the same regular products, but about once a week I change it up and swap in one or two extras. Listen to your skin and what its telling you, that’s the real secret for good skin.

Disclaimer: I am not saying that this will work for you. This is what works for me. Take that as you will. Also this isn’t all the stuff I have. Trust me, the amount of crap I have is actually scary.

Of course you need to follow me on Instagram @infirmofpurpose, Facebook, Twitter, Bloglovin and Lookbook.

I only use Sigma Brushes, check them out here.

Wipes and Toner

I’m unashamedly a lazy person. If I can get away with a face wipe or a toner instead of a full cleanser I will. Most days I will only user a wipe or toner in order to remove any grime from the day. I generally use the cheapest wipes from Target or Kmart, honestly, they’re all exactly the friggin same. The more expensive the less rough but that’s about it. I quite enjoy a good toner and these are my two current faves. The Garnier Pore Refining Toner and the Soin du Visage Byphasse Rosewater toner. The SDVBR is a bit gentler and smells of roses but otherwise they’re quite similar.

Cleanser

I rarely use cleanser to be honest. I generally will only use it if I have been outside for an extended period of time, am wearing relatively heavy makeup (aka after shooting), have exercised vigorously or if I think my skin needs an extra treatment. Ok well that seems like a lot, but usually it’s maybe once a fortnight/once a week. I know that’s probably terrible but it’s what works for my skin. I’m a huge fan of the Biore Charcoal cleanser. It gets really deep into my pores and cleans all the crap out. I also really like the Garnier Anti Shine Cleansing Gel when I want a foaming cleanser. It’s actually a really good dupe for the Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel which I also love.

Exfoliators

Yeah, you guessed it. I exfoliate even less than I cleanse. I generally only do this step when my skin is looking a little dull. A good exfoliator can really brighten the skin and stimulate the production of new cells. If I want a really gritty one I love the St. Ives Apricot Scrub (doesn’t everyone?!). The Indeed Exfoliant is also really good. This is a powder exfoliant that you mix with water before rubbing on your face. It’s remarkably effective. I enjoy it greatly.

Moisturisers

I’ve done a whole post recently on my fave moisturisers so I won’t bang on too much here. Basically. Simple in the mornings and Moogoo or Cetaphil in the evenings. Killer.

Eyes

The only expensive product included in this wrap up is my Lancome eye cream. It’s amazing. Really good. And cheap if you buy it duty free. Otherwise I also really enjoy the Avon Anew Vitale eye cream. Both of them provide really great hydration and anti-ageing properties (never too early to start lezbehonest).

Extras

Sometimes my skin needs that extra push to look its best. That could be a moisturising serum like my Indeed Hyaluron or a Rosehip Oil mixed into my moisturiser like this Sukin one. I also love love love this Beauty And Me Avocado and Oatmeal Mask. Don’t be put off by how cheap it is. It’s fucking amazing. When my skin needs calming I love this Sukin facial mist and I always have Lucas’ Papaw Ointment on my lips.
