All Black

All Black, Always

Well, well. Long time no see blog. So where have I been? Taking some time out for me? Somewhat, but at least now I have a masters degree (and a few extra kilos courtesy of stress eating central). But more than just being hectically busy, I’ve been a bit disillusioned with the entire industry. Nearly everyone having fake followers (I guarantee you at least one of your fave instagrammers/bloggers/youtubers has bought), peasants thinking they can start a Wix site and that they’re a fully fledged fashion blogger, people without credentials or writing experience managing to get into fashion week, as well as the general favouritism that is the entire Brisbane fashion scene. The pressure and guilt that assaults you when you don’t post weekly, when your content isn’t up to your standards, or even when you’re unable to shoot just got a bit much. Not that it’s an excuse. But frankly this is my blog and I can take a break when I want to.

That being said, I am going back to my usual grinchy self (in complete reversal to my cheery xmas retail life) and wearing my usual uniform of all black.

Some people say that all black is safe. That it’s expected. I read a blog post today that made me chuckle. It said that black is a haven, it’s acceptable. My response, you’re simply not doing it correctly. Black is powerful. It’s edgy. Whilst it can camouflage you, it can also make you stand out. In a world of peasants in millennial pink and summery florals, black emerges as a vampiric beacon of hope. An antidote to the perverse positivity that is so ubiquitous in the middle of the Australian summer.

All black brings to mind Francophone style, funeral chic, Carine Roitfeld, Vera Wang, as well as every retail uniform known to humankind. And frankly I enjoy it. Once at fashion week, my friend Ali and I were invited to a last minute soiree, “what should I wear?” I panic screamed at her, “all fucking black always” was her frantic reply. And so the title of this post was born.

All Black

You all know that my fave combo of all time is definitely black on black. I love the statement that monochrome makes, and being a tall, pale figure in all black, it definitely cuts a striking look.

However to avoid looking like a makeup artist on a break, there’s a few things worth adding in. Texture is one of them. I’ve achieved this by tying a long, cheesecloth shirt around my waist. Not only does it billow out behind me as I walk like I’m batman, but it also serves to break up the silhouette of the look, taking it to the next level. Plus the contrasting fabric adds an extra dimension to the outfit.

I’ve also added biker jeans to give a tougher edge to this look. I’ve accessorised with my Vanacci beaded bracelet, the lockstone technology of this piece is really cool, it actually absorbs scent. So when I squirt it with the current scent on rotation (John Varvatos’ Vintage) it releases it slowly over a period of time. If you’re interested in trying anything from Vanacci, use the 10% discount code madeyoulook on checkout ;).

Why I Love All Black

By May 30, 2016 Style

Words by Matt Huxley

You’d find it hard to believe looking at my blog recently, but there was once a time where I hated black. When I was growing up my favourite piece of clothing were some rainbow-striped overalls. I literally wore them every day. The devastation when I couldn’t fit them any more was real.

You would have thought that once I hit my teen years that the “all black emo” stage would have hit and knocked a little bit of style into me. Nope, wrong! My colour du jour was a rather muddy brown. Think a cross between 70% cocoa and poop. Bonus points if it was one of those spliced tops with a different colour sleeve from the elbow down (Sheldon who?). I was also a fan of those ugly ass fake rips that companies used to put on their clothing. And then there was my pied stage where literally everything was both black and white… I looked like a fucking human Magpie.

That rather inauspicious fashion start gave me a newfound appreciation for black once I started to move further into the fashion sphere and read a Vogue (thank god!). Whilst I know that all black is high fashion 101 and pretty bloody basic at the worst of times, it’s still comforting to me. It’s like a fashion security blanket if you will. Plus it was a great cover for that time when I was ballooning after a Macca’s binge.

Whatever your fashion story is, I think that we can all agree that all black is that one comforting go to that will always take pride of place in our wardrobes.
