January Empties

By January 30, 2017 Skincare

Words by Matt Huxley

Look I get that there’s been a lot of skincare posts lately, but there’s more fashion content coming I promise! That being said, I’m doing a skincare series this year on my monthly skincare/bodycare/haircare empties. This previously was on my Youtube channel, but I’ve decided to refocus on my blog and am shifting the series over to here. You’re welcome! It’s a great way for you to see what products I’m actually using up, as well as my thoughts on them.

St Ive’s Apricot Scrub
Well I mean it’s a classic for a reason isn’t it. It’s taken me a while to get through this bad boy, and my skin’s never felt better. I’ve got a backup ready to go, that should give you enough indication of my love for it. Word of advice, don’t go in on your face with this, do a gentle scrub as the walnut shell exfoliants can micro cut your skin.

Biore Triple Action Toner
Nope. Disliked. It smelt largely of alcohol and had a drying effect on my skin. Usually I love biore products but this just didn’t do it for me.

Tresemme Styling Hairspray Extra Hold
Another product I wasn’t a fan of. I found that it was far too heavy for my hair, and clumped it together. This would probably be really good on someone with thicker hair.

Simple Purifying Cleansing Lotion
A decent, plain, cream cleanser. Inoffensive and did the job. That being said, it’s not a must buy for me. But if you have sensitive skin, this is the cleanser for you.

Simple Light Moisturiser
Holy grail product. You know this, you’ll be seeing it a lot this year just so you know.

Lynx Roll On Deodorant
Look a deodorant is a deodorant, I’m a foul sweater so nothing will calm my pits. The smell was inoffensive and it did what it was supposed to do. I just overpowered it.

Lush Lord of Misrule Shower Gel

Love love love this shower gel. The smell is fantastic and the colour is phenomenal. A pity it’s a christmas product.

Lush Snow Fairy Shower Gel

Another christmas product, I love snow fairy. It’s too much for some people (wimps), but a shower with this guy is a candy-scented bonanza.

Schwarzkopf Extra Care Magnificent Strength Shampoo
I actually really enjoyed this shampoo! Whilst it didn’t give me loads of volume (nothing does tbh), it gave my hair a nice scent and cleansed any gel residue out of it thoroughly without stripping it. Would repurchase. Plus that bottle is ROSE GOLD. Dying.

Palmolive Black Orchid Shower Gel
I really enjoy this shower gel hey. It’s cheap and foams up an extraordinary amount. And whilst I’m aware that’s probably due to chemicals, it smells good so I don’t really care.

V Day Alone Time

By January 24, 2017 Skincare

Words by Matt Huxley

As someone who has spent the past 24 Valentine’s Days alone, I am no stranger to the bleak depression and hatred that washes over you like a storm cloud when you have a Facebook feed full of “happy” couples. The majority of whom started dating the previous week. Whilst I’m a definite believer in not restricting your affection for a partner to one day (which let’s be real is a marketing construct), I’m also definitely open to shopping up all the specialty products that appear at this time of year.

And that’s where Lush comes in. As a company that slays every holiday promotion, it’s no surprise that their Valentine’s Day collection is a killer. Bringing me more happiness than that bottle of wine ever could (and minus the headache), the unicorn horn fills your bath with pastel coloured, Neroli scented bubbles. Plus it’s a unicorn horn. I mean that’s every gay fantasy right there. Shoutout to Jade Jolie wearing one at the RPDR S5 reunion.

The Love soap smells absolutely phenomenal. Kinda similar to Rose Jam from the Christmas line, but with a bit more rose. This soap is nice and nourishing on the skin, without being too drying – something I struggle with in solid soap bars.

It wouldn’t be a Valentine’s Day promo without having a few products to keep your pucker on point. Yes I cringed at that statement too but we are going to go with it k? The Kiss lip scrub is great at exfoliating the dead, crusty skin off your lips. It reveals fresh, soft skin underneath and leaving it perfect for lip products. Plus it’s edible 😉

Following the scrub with The Kiss lip gloss adds a subtle shine to the lips, making them alluring af. Word of advice though, this is the type of product you need to prep your lips for, it will show up any cracks or dry spots on your lips. That being said, it’s nice and hydrating. Gives you a moist pout. Phenomenal.

So what are your plans for Valentine’s Day? Will you be rolling solo like yours truly or doing something special? Let me know in the comments below! Make sure you browse the Lush Valentine’s Day collection here (available from 26th of January).

My Highlighter Collection

By January 18, 2017 Skincare

Words by Matt Huxley

Look. I’ve never been one to do things by half, and that principle certainly applies when buying stuff. I am a marketer’s dream, my ambition only being limited by my non-existent budget. A bargain bin excites me like nothing else (except perhaps a buffet) and when it comes to makeup, highlighters are my one true love. I think it stems from the fact that I don’t really do eyeshadow, other than to matte out my oily eyelids, so I tend to emphasise my cheekbones. Cheek products are certainly my go-to when I’m on the hunt in priceline.

That being said, I’ve amassed a significant enough collection to warrant (in my eyes) a blog post. Now naturally some of these are included in palettes with other products. But I’ll only be reviewing and talking about the highlighter section. And yes. I swatched. I’ve never felt more like a third rate youtuber in my life.

  1. Australis Contour and Highlight Palette (Light)
  2. The Balm Mary Lou Manizer
  3. Sleek Face Form Palette
  4. Elf Colour Stick (Golden Peach)
  5. The Body Shop Eyeshadow (Oh Honey)
  6. It Cosmetics Vitality Face Disc
  7. Savvy Blush/Highlight Duo
  8. Mac Mineralised Skinfinish (Lightscapade)
  9. Revlon Sculpt and Highlight Palette (Light)
  10. Australis High Life
  11. Dusty Girls Eyeshadow (Paperbark)
  12. The Body Shop Eyeshadow (Be My Clementine)
  13. Elf Blush (Gotta Glow)
  14. The Body Shop Eyeshadow (Sugar Glaze)
  15. Sephora Trio

  1. Australis High Life: Honestly, I never use this aye. It’s incredibly powdery and is far too warm toned for my skin. It looks quite muddy on my skin which is annoying. There’s definitely a lot of shimmer in it, but the undertones make this one unsuitable for me.
  2. Revlon Sculpt and Highlight Palette (Light): This was the one developed with Chloe Morello. I like it. But I think it could be better. The colour itself is quite nice and it’s very subtle on the skin. It doesn’t have much shimmer at all, making it suitable for those days where you don’t wanna look lit af.
  3. The Body Shop Eyeshadow (Sugar Glaze): Yes eyeshadows can be multipurposed to anything you want. This is a shimmery white one, and looks nice on my skin. It can be a little bit visible so you need to really blend the edges of it to make it seamless.
  4. Sleek Face Form Trio: A nice, shimmery, champagne coloured highlighter. This one is pretty cool toned which is good. I really should reach for this one more then I do.
  5. Elf Colour Stick (Golden Peach): The one cream highlight that I own. This product is veeeeeery peach toned. It works on natural days blended in with a brush. Don’t apply directly from the bullet as it’s very easy to get way too much on ya mug.
  6. Mac Mineralised Skinfinish (Lightscapade): My current holy grail highlight. I love this stuff dearly. It gives the perfect amount of shine, blends seamlessly and there’s a tonne of product in the pan. If you have pale skin you need this in your life. Iconic.
  7. The Body Shop Eyeshadow (Oh Honey): A really nice, cool toned shadow. This one adds a lot of shine and gives the skin a nice sheen. It’s decently blendable too which is nice.
  8. Sephora Trio: It’s not really showing up in the swatch, but this subtle highlight gives a pink tinged shimmer. It looks quite nice layered over another subtle highlight, but it’s not one I really reach for regularly.
  9. Savvy Blush/Highlight Duo: This highlight isn’t very shimmery and comes off a bit chalky on the skin. I don’t love it, but it can look nice layered under another highlight.
  10. Dusty Girls Eyeshadow (Paperbark): This golden toned shadow works well on slightly warmer skin tones than mine, but I can still pull it off.
  11. The Balm Mary Lou Manizer: Now this is the product you use when you want your cheeks to be absolutely glowing. It’s even a tad too shiny for even me. Like you are genuinely lit af with this product.
  12. Australis Highlight/Contour Palette (Light, shades 1 and 3): The two highlight shades in this palette are pretty similar to the revlon one. They aren’t phenomenal and are on the matter side for highlights. To be honest, this palette is only worth buying for the contours, which are really good.
  13. The Body Shop Eyeshadow (Be My Clementine): This is coming out far redder on camera then it does in person. It’s a lovely cool-toned pale orange with a subtle shimmer through it. It’s kinda like a blush and highlight in one and I’m actually bummed that they’re discontinuing it. Works really well with a nice fluffy brush to lightly sweep over your cheekbones.
  14. Elf Blush (Gotta Glow): A bit of a dupe for the Nars Albatross highlight. But this one is far inferior. It’s probably the most powdery and chalky one of the lot. It’s a good colour and definitely adds a tonne of glow to your face. But just blend the shit out of it.
  15. It Cosmetics Vitality Face Disc: This was my go-to highlighter for the longest amount of time, before it was surpassed by my Mac one. This colour and shimmer is really lovely on the skin and it’s very finely milled, making it seamless and easy to apply. Love it.

My Iconic Skincare Products

By January 11, 2017 Skincare

Words by Matt Huxley

The word iconic tends to get bandied around a bit in skincare circles. Every other month a company has their new “iconic” product out that promises to be even better than the last range. Of course by and large this is just marketing, but sometimes you do stumble across a product that truly does work for your skin – in my books, this gives it iconic status.

I have pruned, culled and eviscerated my skincare collection to determine the true iconic products for my skin. These are the best of the best and I have presented them according to category. Keep in mind that I have combination skin, meaning that I get oily in my t zone (especially during summer). It’s not overly sensitive either. You should always know your skin type before purchasing or trying products.

Cleanser – Vitaman Facial Cleanser

A surprising addition to this list, I was only very recently introduced to the Vitaman cleanser. It’s grapefruit scent and soothing, yet thorough, cleanse quickly made it a staple in my routine. The pump bottle means that it’s perfect for shower cleanses, quick and easy. It doesn’t have many nasties in it, yet still manages to foam up nicely without stripping the skin. I find that it removes any unnecessary oil, grime and makeup effectively. Usually I’m suspicious of “man branded” skincare as I usually find it to be full of fragrance, but this one is starting to change my opinions a bit!

Toner – Alpha H Liquid Gold

Can one really produce an iconic skincare post without including this cult fave? It’s earned its acclaim for a good reason – it’s truly phenomenal. I’ve included this in the toner section as you apply it the same way you would a toner, but it’s almost like a liquid exfoliant in some ways. It works to really refine the skin’s texture and regenerate any dull or tired looking skin. My skin can sometimes look quite dull, so this product is a life saver! I whip it out about once a week and I find that that’s enough to keep my skin looking fresh. If you have sensitive skin I probably wouldn’t recommend this as it can be quite harsh. But otherwise, I can’t say enough good things about it!

Exfoliator – Alpha H Micro Cleanse Super Scrub

Alpha H is getting a few mentions in this list! This Glycolic acid scrub has a bit of a microdermabrasion effect and really works well on smoothing skin and refining pores. The exfoliating beads are finely milled and don’t contain any sharp edges, meaning that your skin isn’t getting cut up. The scrub works well to exfoliate off any excess dead skin and clears any blocked pores. This allows any serums/moisturisers or oils to penetrate the skin more effectively, increasing the benefits you receive from them.

Serum – The Body Shop Drops of Youth Concentrate

Wow, what a truly iconic product. Since integrating this bad boy into my routine I’ve noticed such a dramatic improvement in the texture and moisture levels of my skin. My skin is smoother and more hydrated than ever. The serum contains stem cells from three separate plants, meaning that the collagen in the face is replenished. I literally can’t say enough good things about this serum.

Day Moisturiser – Simple Light Moisturiser

Whoever said that drugstore skincare brands were shit clearly hadn’t tested out this moisturiser. It’s phenomenal. I use it every single morning and have done so for years. It sinks straight in, doesn’t leave a residue, yet my skin is hydrated all night. It’s a truly great product. It doesn’t have any fragrance or excess nasties, it just gets in and does the job.

Night Moisturiser – Apotekah Original Face Cream

Apotekah is an up and coming brand that has some truly phenomenal products. The original face cream is a really great, honest product. Similar to the Simple product above, it doesn’t have much fragrance and works well to just get the job done. It’s a bit of a dryer texture, meaning that you have to massage it in to your face, which I find results in better penetration of the product. I definitely prefer this one to gel moisturisers which I find don’t hydrate as effectively as a thicker cream. Plus I find that the texture of this cream works well with any oils or extra serums that I may add in to my routine.  Don’t forget that you can get 10% off any Apotekah product by using the code MATTH10.

Facial Oil – Apotekah Facial Treatment Oil

Containing Jojoba, Apricot Kernel, Grapeseed, Sweet Almond, Geranium, Patchouli, Vitamin E and Carrot Seed Oils, this beautiful oil smooths nicely over the skin, adding excess hydration and suppressing excess sebum production. This is my absolute favourite oil to use as I find that the blend works well for my skin type and it doesn’t over stimulate my skin, which I find that some other oils can do. I find that many people are a bit scared of using oils on their face, so I’ll definitely do a post in the future explaining why they are so effective.

Treatment – The Body Shop Tea Tree Night Serum

I’m lucky in the fact that I rarely have to use a treatment on any pimples. However I find that tea tree products have been the best at reducing the size and redness of any problem areas quickly. Benzac Peroxide cream used to work really well for me, but I found that my skin was starting to get used to it, so I switched back to tea tree. This serum is just a light lotion that I smooth over my skin after serum and before moisturiser at night, if I have any blemishes. I find that they are really reduced by morning and typically after two days are basically nothing.

Eye Cream – Lancome Genefique Yeux Eye Cream

If you’re going to splurge on one thing, make sure it’s your eye cream. The skin around the eye is the most delicate on the face, and the one that requires the most specialty products. This lovely cream contains anti ageing products and works to protect the delicate eye skin. I’ve noticed a bit of a reduction in my dark circles and a significant decrease in the puffiness of the skin. Being a contacts wearer, there is a lot of stress placed on the entire eye area, and this definitely helps to correct and contain that. Worth the investment I promise.

Lip Cream – Lucas’ Pawpaw Ointment

I mean was there ever another option? This bad boy may contain petroleum jelly, but it’s still the only product I’ve found that manages to keep my lips moist all night long. It’s a classic for a reason people.
